Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands Holds Youth Open Day for EU-China Year of Youth

On May 6, the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands holds the Bridges of Friendship Youth Open Day in celebration of 2011 EU-China Year of Youth. About 200 Dutch and Chinese student representatives from major Dutch universities and interns from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs gather in the Embassy to share youthful vigor, experience different cultures, exchange thoughts and feelings, deepen understanding and friendship and look forward to a common vision of better future for EU-China win-win cooperation. Senior officials from the Dutch Government including H.E. Mr. van Oosterom, Director-General for Political Affairs of Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and heads of universities and youth organizations are also present.

Ambassador ZHANG Jun gives remarks

In his address Ambassador ZHANG Jun points out, EU-China Year of Youth was jointly announced by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Mr. Barroso, President of the European Commission at the 12th China-EU summit in 2009. This is the very first theme year celebration co-sponsored by China and the EU during their 36-year relationship and fully demonstrates the high expectations of our leaders toward the youth, as well as their foresight in deepening the friendly relations between the two sides. Ambassador ZHANG hopes that youth from both sides will take this opportunity to learn from each other and to surpass the old generation in contributing to the long-term and stable development of China-EU and Sino-Dutch relationships. Ambassador ZHANG also stresses that the foundation and momentum for the stable development of China-EU relationship lie in the mutual trust between our peoples, in particular the mutual understanding and friendship between the young peoples. Accordingly the Chinese Embassy has established a platform named 'Reading China: Youngsters' Dialogue', and on regular basis invites young Dutch students to come to the embassy and exchange views with young diplomats on topics of common interests. By doing so, mutual understanding has been enhanced, while gaps have been narrowed. In future, the Chinese Embassy will continue to open up more channels, establish more platforms and encourage more people to participate in the building of bilateral relations and to consolidate the mutual trust between our peoples. He hopes that Dutch youth will have a more comprehensive observation on China and more Chinese youth will come to the Netherlands to further their self-development. By doing so, they will together bring about vitality to the bilateral relationship.

The open day event features sharing and communication. Chinese and Dutch students perform music and Chinese Tai Chi together. A special session of Youngsters' Dialogue attracts dozens of young people to exchange views on issues of common interests with young diplomats from the Embassy. Students from both countries believe that EU-China Year of Youth provide for a good opportunity for the younger generation to contribute with their wisdom and strength to the stable, healthy and sustained development of EU-China and Sino-Dutch relationships. To fulfill this historical mission, they will further enhance their communication, seek for more consensus and work hand in hand for the common development.
