H. E. Mr. Zhang Jun, Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands, received an interview recently with Global The Hague, a magazine which enjoys a high reputation among the diplomatic corps in The Hague. During the interview, Ambassador Zhang elaborated on issues that Dutch public are concerned about, such as the Sino-Dutch relationship and Chinese measures to tackle the global economic crisis. This interview is now published in the summer edition of Global The Hague in both English and Dutch.

His Excellency Zhang Jun took up his post as Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands one year ago. Global the Hague was privileged to partake of his hospitality at the beautiful Chinese Embassy at The Hague's Willem Lodewijklaan.
Although the Netherlands may be a mere speck on the world map, many Chinese take an active interest in our country and culture. The majority of Chinese people have heard of Dutch masters Rembrandt and Van Gogh, while many are also familiar with such national Dutch symbols as cloudy skies, windmills and tulips. Yet the main factor that links China and the Netherlands is the global economy. Particularly in these tough economic times, both countries must strengthen our cooperation and improve their competencies to be able to serve each other more effectively. Ambassador Zhang plays a key role in this process: 'Due to my working experience in the Chinese Central Government in the past few years, I am fully aware of the importance of the Sino-Dutch relations. As Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands, my primary task is to promote bilateral relations, from which, I believe, both sides benefit. The stable trade relations between the Netherlands and China, which dates back centuries , are more important than ever in this uncertain time.'
Impressed by Dutch involvement
'I first arrived in the Netherlands at the end of April 2008, not long after the South West of China was hit by a powerful earthquake. The earthquake caused immense damage, tens of thousands died and millions of others have been affected. I was deeply impressed by the involvement of the Dutch people after this terrible disaster: they not only organised humanitarian aid efforts, but I also received personal messages from several ministers. Even Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands expressed her sympathy. I was deeply touched by the overwhelming interest and concern shown by the Dutch people. Although the Dutch media coverage sometimes shows their one-sided or even biased view of China, more and more Dutch people have a better understanding of China thanks to last year's Olympic Games, which presented not only high-level sport competitions but also Chinese culture and development to the outside world. I'm confident that through constant exchanges and communications, the mutual understanding between our two peoples can be further improved.'
Bright Perspective of Bilateral Relations
'China is one of the major players of the world and offers a huge market for businesses in the Netherlands, for example, in areas such as agriculture, water management, high-technology, clean energy and logistics. Despite the current credit crisis that has affected so many parts of the world, the Chinese banking industry is solid and functioning well. Although we naturally experienced some tough times as well, we are back on the road to recovery and the economic growth of China will remain strong. According to experts, the worst period is over, and we will see more positive signs in the second half of this year, which means more opportunities for Dutch businesses in China. China is willing to work together with all nations to cope with challenges and seek for common development on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit. China has been a good business partner to the Netherlands, and vice versa. The prospect of bilateral cooperation is broad and Shanghai Expo 2010 will offer another golden opportunity for promoting our partnership. It's a classic case of a win-win situation.'

Zijne excellentie Zhang Jun is sinds een jaar in Nederland als ambassadeur van de Volksrepubliek China. Voor een interview werd Global the Hague zeer gastvrij ontvangen in de prachtige ambassade van China aan de Willem Lodewijklaan in Den Haag.
Hoewel Nederland een klein stukje op de wereldkaart is, zijn veel Chinezen geïnteresseerd in ons land. Iedereen in China heeft wel eens gehoord van de Nederlandse meester-schilders Rembrand en Van Gogh. Ook de wolken, de windmolens en de tulpen staan symbool als de kenmerken van dit land. Het belangrijkste aspect wat China met Nederland verbindt is de wereldeconomie. Vooral in deze economische zware tijden moet de competentie voor beide parijen worden vergroot om elkaar beter van dienst te kunnen zijn. In dit proces speelt de ambassadeur Zhang Jun een belangrijke rol. "Door mijn werk voor de Chinese regering in de afgelopen jaren, ben ik me zeer bewust van de onderlinge relatie tussen China en Nederland. Als Ambassadeur van China in Nederland is het mijn belangrijkste taak om de bilaterale betrekkingen te optimaliseren, waar beide landen in mijn ogen van kunnen profiteren. De stabiele en eeuwenoude handelsrelatie tussen Nederland en China is in deze onzekre tijden belangrijker dan ooit."
Bijzondere betrokkenheid
"Eind april 2008 arriveerde ik voor het eerst in Nederland en kort daarop was de krachtige aardschok die het zuidwesten van China trof. De aardbeving veroorzaakte enorme vernielingen en heeft tienduizenden slachtoffers gemaakt. Miljoenen Chinezen werden door deze aardbevingen getroffen. Ik was diep onder indruk van de betrokkenheid van Nederland bij deze vreselijke ramp. Niet alleen waren er hulpacties maar ook persoonlijke betuigingen van verschillende ministers. Zelfs de Koningin der Nederlanden heeft haar sympathie geuit. Deze bijzondere betrokkenheid geeft een gevoel dat we samen sterk staan en dat heeft me diep geraakt. Hoewel in de Nederlandse berichtgeving soms een eenzijdig of vertekend beeld van China wordt geschetst, begrijpen Nederlanders China steeds beter. Dit komt mede door de Olympische Spelen van vorig jaar, waar sportwedstrijden op een hoog niveau gespeeld werden en waar de hele wereld getuige was van de Chinese cultuur en ontwikkelingen. Ik weet zeker dat het wederzijds begrip van onze volken alleen nog maar beter zal worden als we blijven samenwerken en communiceren."
Heldere kijk op bilaterale relaties
"China is een van de grootste spelers in de wereld en biedt een enorme afzetmarkt voor Nederlandse ondernemers, bijvoorbeeld op het gebied van landbouw, water-management, geavanceerde technologie, schone energie en logistiek. Ondanks de kredietcrisis die op dit moment veel landen in haar greep heeft, heeft China een stabiel bankwezen dat goed functioneert. Natuurlijk hebben ook wij economisch zwaar weer gehad maar we zitten weer in de wederopbouw en de economische groei van China zal sterk blijven. Volgens specialisten is het ergste achter de rug en zullen we in de tweede helft van dit jaar meer positieve tekenen zien die daarop wijzen. Dit betekent meer kansen voor Nederlandse ondernemers in China. China is bereid om met alle naties samen te werken om zo de uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden en te streven naar ontwikkeling op basis van onderling respect en wederzijds voordeel. China en Nederland zijn alrijd goede zakenpartners van elkaar geweest. De verwachtingen voor onze bilaterale samenwerking zijn groot en de Shanghai Expo 2010 is opnieuw een gouden kans om ons partnerschap naar een hoger niveau te tillen. Het is een klassieke win-winsituatie."
